The deal is that when modchips were common, a lot of systems were sold with them already installed in poor countries, and were required for the consoles to play the burned games that were primarily what were sold in stores in those countries. Burned discs were a lot more affordable than a hard drive and network adapter.

Also, modchips were out within about a year of ps2 launch, while fmcb and Hdloader took at least 4 years. Then slim systems couldn't use a hard drive and came out 4 years into the life of the system.Remember that you need a computer to also install games from, and a lot of people in the Philippines and middle east in the early and mid 2000s didn't have their own computers. A console was expensive enough to get at their incomes, so cheap per disc burned game copies were the market. Matrix Infinity? You can disable the boot logo on settings. There's a modded version of Matrix called MODBO 5 that features Dev3 mode.
Modchips are very. Vanilla, if you disable the boot logo (and pad detection time, set it to the minimum value), you can only tell they are there when you notice your NTSC PS2 is running a Backup PAL game perfectly.
Also, don't hold buttons while booting, it can do like 15 different things, including disable the modchip, booting into Dev modes and forcing DVD/AUTO/CD mode.Edit: Corrected the name of the Matrix 'clone'Edit 2: In Brazil, we manufactured the Thunder Pro II chip, wich is like 'a level above MODBO 5', but I don't recommend trying to get one because they are commonly called 'Thunder', but the first version was also called Thunder and has almost no feature, not even a config menu, so you can't tell wich is wich and the Pro II version is more expensive than other chips. So far, i've only saw people reccomend this clone over the original.
Modbo 4 is advertised as having more compatibility with Dual-Layer DVDs than an original Matrix. Regardless of this being true or not, Modbo 5 is superior to Matrix because it can boot.elf files (Open PS2 Loader, LaunchElf, Emulators and etc) from USB, so if your laser dies or you simply run out of blank dvds to burn your backup games, you can launch OPL from a Flash Drive and run games directly from the ISO.
Also, the Modbo 5 allows you to save settings like the original Matrix. Cheap clones of Matrix will say 'settings saved' but save nothing or will simply freeze. Also, if you choose the Matrix chip, look to the firmware number.
If it's above 1.93, it's not original, i'm not going to say you can't save settings with those, but there's the risk.Edit: the original Matrix chips don't have 'Matrix' or anythig related to this written above the big black central chip of the board. It has instead information about the central black chip itself, like the model and manufacturer. Yes, that is what I was talking about. There seem to be two versions, one that even a reputable site like EurAsia sells, which looks like and also another version that I've seen on ebay and is also the one you linked and it looks like The second one has some minor text differences, the PCBs is brighter and the contact points have a silver color, instead of what seems like gold on the first one I linked (although it's hard to tell, because of how the first one is shot.)Also are there any other sites which have competent prices, but also have an option to pay with a credit card?.
